The modestly fortified castle of Vissec is located between the Causses and the Cévennes on the square of the eponymous village, in the Gard department of Languedoc-Roussillon. This small family castle has faded from modern history, but its medieval past is very rich, as evidenced by the ruins of the powerful fortress-castle of the Vissec de la Tude, the first family of the lords of Vissec. Vissec is mentioned as early as 1084 in the cartulary of the Abbey of Gellone at Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert. Vissec suffered the Albigensian Crusade and its incorporation into the royal crown in 1229. Much later, in 1628, Vissec was destroyed again on orders of the Duke of Rohan, during the Wars of Religion. The French Revolution sold the properties of the last Marquis of Vissec, Alexandre de La Tour du Pin – Gouvernet. Since then, this very small castle has fallen dormant. But thanks to the Internet, it is present all over the world and visitors from every corner of the planet pass through it... A restoration of its wall paintings has brought to light its exceptional décor, for the place and the era that earned it designation as a Historic Monument on February 2, 2009.
